Since 1997, the Basel Action Network (BAN) has been a watchdog of the United Nations Basel Convention, which restricts the trade of hazardous waste between more developed countries and less developed countries. BAN prevents pollution dumping on the world's poorest residents.

On January 1, 2020, new global rules placing trade controls on plastic waste for 188 potential US trading partners will go into effect. While the US is not a Basel Party, its trading partners overseas are and thus these new rules will have a profound impact on US municipalities, businesses, waste haulers, and brokers. If you have not heard of these new rules or have not taken steps to prepare for them you or your trading partners could face returned shipments and bad publicity at best and prosecutions in the worst scenarios.

BAN Founder and Executive Director, Jim Puckett will discuss the implications of these new rules and advocate for stakeholders and governments in the US to find ways to harmonize with these rules and prepare for the coming sea change in the plastics recycling trade.
