STAR is a member of SWEEP and encourages cities and businesses to be a part of this industry-changing initiative. SWEEP is a voluntary environmental performance standard that focuses on municipal solid waste management programs and the business and industrial activities that deliver them. 

Similar to the popular green building rating system, LEED, those who meet the requirements of the standard will receive SWEEP certification.

The program aims to transform the market by establishing consistent definitions of environmental performance benchmarks, integrating policy and practice, and rewarding leadership in sustainable materials management approaches to discarded materials. 

SWEEP is comprised of two complementary and reinforcing performance requirements for Local Governments and the Industry Companies that support local government programs.
